The player controls Ethan Winters as he searches for his wife in a derelict plantation occupied by a cannibal family, solving puzzles and fighting enemies.
It is the first main series game to use a first-person view. It was presented as a virtual reality demo, Kitchen, a year prior to its announcement at E3 , and supports the PlayStation VR headset. Resident Evil 7 was considered a return to form for the series; critics praised the gameplay, graphics, and design, but criticized the boss battles and the final chapter.
The PlayStation VR version received positive reviews, with some criticism including decreased resolution and physical discomfort. As of December , the game has sold over six million copies worldwide. Two downloadable content scenarios, Not a Hero and End of Zoe, were also released for the game.
Gameplay The player controls Ethan Winters from a first-person perspective as he searches the Baker house for his missing wife. Although Ethan is a civilian with few combat skills, he is able to arm himself with a variety of weapons including handguns, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws against the Baker family and a humanoid form of fungus known as the "Molded". He can also block attacks to reduce damage. Various sections of the game are spent being pursued by members of the Baker family, who, if engaged in combat, can only be temporarily incapacitated.
However, these encounters are avoidable by means of stealth, or running away. Unlike Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, the gameplay emphasizes horror and exploration over action. The inventory uses a grid-based system with an initial capacity of 12 slots, but may be expanded several times over the course of the game.
An item can occupy up to two spaces, and four items may be assigned to the D-pad. Item boxes found in save rooms may also be used to manage and store items, and can be retrieved from different item boxes for later use. Items in the inventory can be used, examined, or combined with other items to increase their usefulness. Many of the game's puzzles require that items be examined under certain conditions in order to reveal secrets. Tape recorders can be used to manually save the game's progress, which, depending on the given difficulty level, may require the use of a cassette tape.
Videotapes are scattered for Ethan to find, which place the player in the perspective of a different character, often revealing plot information or clues needed to solve a puzzle. However, I will say that if you do have a PlayStation 4 that checking out the game in VR is well worth doing. I fell in love with Resident Evil 7 after the first 30 minutes. This is a game that has it all. While it may not have the action of the last three games, there is still plenty of action here.
It is just this game is more focused on making you scared and worried about what could be behind each door. If you got burned out as the series went into a more action style, Resident Evil 7 is the perfect game for you.
I have played some games that have made me jump over the years, but Resident Evil 7: Biohazard took it to a whole new level. Resident Evil 7 though brought the horror back as well as changing the perspective. I got very invested in the story of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard right from the start. You are playing as a guy called Ethan whose significant other Mia went missing around three years ago. One day, Ethan gets a really weird video from her telling him that she is not only alive but that she is being kept somewhere and for him to come.
The place Mia is being kept is this old, dilapidated and creepy as hell plantation in the South. To say that Ethan has stumbled into a real mess of a situation is a massive understatement.
Turns out Daddy is the patriarch of the Baker family and these people are crazy, messed up and there is more going on here than you first think. I was very impressed with the storytelling in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Just when you think you have it all fully figured out the game throws a twist at you that for longtime fans is pretty awesome.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a fantastic looking game. Moving the game into the first person made for a very immersive experience. You really do feel like you are in the Baker home and the surrounding area.
The house is very well detailed and there are all kinds of photos, newspaper clippings, and other stuff all around the house that make it seem really well lived in. The character models are great and they are not shy about getting into your face. My only little gripe about the presentation is the facial animations. The voice acting is amazing and each character feels like a real person. The whole sound of the game is great actually.
